I formally owned and operated two BRC approved food factories in the South West of England, for 10 years I faced the following challenges.
The job centres sent me dross, they only wanted to tick a box to enable the individual to continue to claim benefit.
Employment Agencies were unreliable, promised everything, delivered little and if the workers had an arm and a leg at each corner it was a bonus.
Investment in training was pointless and the staff turnover was huge and therefore the actual operating costs astronomic as efficiency and productivity was poor however hard the Companies management tried to motivate people.
As a result we started to import people directly, mainly from Portugal or it’s colonies but whilst it gave you relief in having people that turned up, the attitude was mixed and the performance variable.
In despair in 2005 we decided to try Eastern Europeans on the basis that they couldn’t perform any worse. Out of around a 100, 50% were Polish and what a revelation:
Well educated, respectful, interested, quick to learn, productive, efficient and flexible. At last we had found a solution – the Polish jobs market. Sure the language issue had to be managed but it’s amazing what a few pictures will do!
